New York City, though officially named the City of New York, has a few nicknames. It is also known as The Big Apple and the City that never Sleeps. It is one of the largest cities in the world, with the New York metropolitan area having a population close to 19 million people. The skyline is one of the most recognizable in the world and is made up of the three skylines of Midtown Manhattan, Downtown Brooklyn, and Lower Manhattan. NYC is also home to teams from each of major professional sports leagues. There have been a total of fourteen World Series series in New York since the beginning of baseball. The two major league baseball clubs, the New York Mets and the New York Yankees, are also affiliated with the two minor league teams known as the Brooklyn Cyclones and Staten Island Yankees. In the NFL the city is represented by the New York Giants and the New York Jets who must share a stadium in New Jersey. The cities National Hockey League team is the New York Islanders but many people are fans of the New Jersey Devils as well. On the NBA side the New York Knicks stand alone as the cities basketball representatives. Being such a large city the population can support a large number of New York events. Tourists from across the world come to enjoy the many Broadway Theatre productions. Some of the hit shows include The Jersey Boys at the August Wilson Theatre and Wicked now playing at the Gershwin Theatre.
